"Legal Unity and Pluralism"

The Käte Hamburger Kolleg „Legal Unity and Pluralism” (EViR) at the University of Münster has been funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research since 2021. Fellows from all over the world, together with scholars from Münster, examine the dynamic tension between legal unity and pluralism from antiquity to the present. This is the first attempt to systematically investigate the phenomenon in its entire historical depth and across disciplinary boundaries.

“Roman law shows an astonishing openness towards foreign legal customs”

The transfer of assets from one generation to the next is a key social process, and already had a legal framework in antiquity. Dealing intensively with ancient inheritance law, legal historian Éva Jakab often comes across cases that contradict the universally valid Roman legal norms. In this interview, she explains the origins of this legal pluralism and how Roman legal scholars came to terms with it.

New fellows in July

In July, two scholars are returning to the Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Legal Unity and Pluralism" to continue their fellowships: The legal historians Ferdinando Mazzarella (Palermo) and Sebastian M. Spitra (Vienna).

The MS Wissenschaft comes to Münster

From 18 to 22 July, the MS Wissenschaft will dock at Münster Stadthafen (near the Kunsthalle). The exhibition on the subject of freedom can then be visited daily from 10.00 to 18.30. The Kolleg is participating with an exhibit and two accompanying events.
